hem|lock «HEHM lok», noun.
1. a poisonous plant with spotted stems, finely divided leaves, and small, white flowers; poison hemlock. It belongs to the parsley family and was formerly used in medicine as a powerful sedative.

3. any one of a group of evergreen trees of the pine family. Hemlocks have short blunt needles, small cones, drooping branches, and reddish bark. Bark from hemlocks is used in tanning.
